Chandigarh Police issue advisory to preserve peace at PU ahead of Polls

The Chandigarh Police have issued an advisory to Panjab University (PU) to ensure peace on campus ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. According to police officials, the university has been instructed not to allow any political rallies without prior permission from the UT administration. Additionally, strict entry protocols will be enforced, requiring valid identification for entry and thorough checking at entrance gates to prevent troublemakers from entering.

Ensuring Campus safety:

The advisory emphasizes the prohibition of weapons on campus and the installation of operational CCTV cameras at key locations. Political posters defacing campus property are also prohibited. PU authorities are urged to conduct meetings with student unions and parties to enforce compliance with these regulations.

Authorities will conduct surprise checks at hostels and engage in night patrolling to ensure campus security. Unauthorised individuals found on campus will be reported to the police. The recent detention of seven student protesters outside the vice-chancellor’s office highlights ongoing campus tensions. The protesters, representing student parties, have been demanding OBC reservation for student admissions and faculty recruitment.

PU officials cite the complexity of adopting OBC reservation policies, as the university operates as an inter-state body corporate. Approval for reservations is expected to take several months, though the process has commenced. Despite forming a committee to address the issue, PU has yet to receive recommendations. Some faculty members of the committee have joined student protests, indicating ongoing concerns within the university community.

Peaceful protests and compliance:

While student parties are permitted to protest peacefully, adherence to regulations is mandatory. PU authorities previously requested the removal of protest materials outside the V-C office, citing defacement, but no action has been taken thus far.
